Problem

It’s a challenge to find plant-based food on the go.

As a person who has been eating a plant-based diet since 2016, I often have to research restaurants every time I travel or go out to eat with non-vegans. Today, there isn’t an efficient way of knowing if restaurants offer food with specific dietary restrictions. There are also cases where restaurants will offer substitutions that are not listed on their menu or website.

solution

Meet Veago, an app that allows you to easily find plant-based options on any menu.

The app filters non-plant-based food from menus so vegan users know their options. For restaurants that may not have plant-based options, the app will make the meals vegan by creating substitutions based on the existing menu, or by removing non-vegan items. This will help guide users on how to order a meal vegan.

Users can access a restaurant’s full menu so non-vegan folks can be included in any restaurant pick.

Research | 6 vegans and 2 non-vegans were surveyed

01 - What challenges are plant-based eaters facing today?

I ordered a Chinese noodle meal and it didn’t list the ingredients so I assumed it would be fine; my fault so I picked out the meat and egg.

— Eris, 22, Vegan

I like to eat out with friends, and thankful LA is pretty vegan-friendly, but it is extra effort for the group to ensure there is an option for me. Menus can be out of date or missing from websites.

— Jamie, 34, Vegan

My girlfriend is vegan, but I’m not. I picked out a date spot and the restaurant I chose only had vegetarian options. I felt bad because I read “veg” on the menu and thought it was ok.

— Ethan, 20, Non-vegan

How might we easily provide customers with vegan menu options at any restaurant?

takeaways

Design considerations…

  1. Access to all restaurant menus, with clear vegan options listed.

  2. If there are no vegan options, clear instructions on which foods need substitutions.

  3. A way to look at the full menu for non-vegan friends.

  4. A map to look around the area for vegan options.

  5. Delivery, pick-up, and reservation options (the project scope).

Reflection.

You are always growing and learning.

This project has seen many versions and has only grown over time. Veago started as a school assignment to create a new type of food delivery app and build an end-to-end delivery experience. Since working in the UX field I’ve learned so much about accessibility, design systems, and simplifying experiences. I have so many ideas about how this experience can continue to improve, so this has become a passion project.
